Michael Latzer is Professor of Communications at the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ), University of Zurich (UZH), Switzerland, where he chairs the Media Change & Innovation Division since 2008. He is also an executive board member of the interdisciplinary competence center ITSL (Center for Information Technology, Society, and Law) at the UZH.

 

He is an expert on Internet studies, media convergence, critical algorithm studies, European information society issues, media economics and politics, telecommunications and media governance, and has lectured extensively on these issues. Latzer holds a Mag. rer.soc.oec. (MSc) in Business Informatics and a Dr. phil. in Political Science from the University of Vienna, Austria, and earned his habilitation in Economics and Politics of Communication at the University of Vienna.

 

Latzer held various positions in research institutions worldwide. Among other things, he was Deputy Director of the Research Unit for Institutional Change & European Integration at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS), Vienna, Austria; Senior Researcher at the Institute of Technology Assessment of AAS; Visiting Professor at the Panthéon-Assas University in Paris, France, at the Department of Communication, University of California, San Diego, and at the Department of Organization, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration; Visiting Fellow at the Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan, Tokyo; Visiting Researcher at the National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan, and at the Communications Department of Keio University, Tokyo, Japan; Visiting Scholar at the USC Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future, Los Angeles, and at the Columbia Institute of Tele-Information, Columbia University (CITI), New York, USA.

 

Latzer received various national and international fellowships including a three-year APART-Fellowship (Austrian Programme for Advanced Research and Technology) and a fellowship by the Japan Society of the Promotion of Sciences. Recent awards include the Top Faculty Paper Award of the Communication Law and Policy Division of the ICA (International Communications Association); the Emerald Literati Award for Excellence; the Best Paper Award of the Annual Conference of the Swiss Association for Communication and Media Research (SGKM); and the Outstanding Journal Article Award of the German Society of Communications Research (DGPuK).

 

He is consultant to private and public institutions and member of numerous communications associations, such as SGKM, AoIR, ITS, ICA, ECREA, and DGPuK.

 

Latzer is the author of more than 200 publications including books and edited volumes on Internet Economics, Media Convergence, European Public Sphere, Economics of E-Commerce, Self- and Co-Regulation, and Technology Governance. His articles have been published in top-refereed journals such as New Media & Society; Telecommunications Policy; Convergence; International Journal of Communication, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media; The European Journal of Communication Research; Communications & Strategies; Knowledge, Technology & Policy; and EM-Electronic Markets.
