Mag. Dr. Florian Saurwein is a Research and Teaching Associate in the Division on Media Change & Innovation at the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research (IPMZ) of the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He studied Communication Science and Political Science at the University of Vienna and holds an M.A. in Communication Science. Prior to joining IPMZ he was research fellow at the Research Unit for Institutional Change and European Integration (IWE) and at the Institute of Technology Assessment (ITA) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He was a lecturer for media economics and politics at the Department for Communication Science at the University of Salzburg and research fellow and project manager at the Department of Communications, University of Vienna, Austria.
Florian Saurwein has comprehensive experience in research on media and politics, and has regularly published on new modes of governance in the convergent communications sector and on the Europeanization of the public sphere. Among others, he is co-author of the book "Self- and Co-regulation in the Mediamatics Sector. Alternative Regulation between State and Market" (2002, in German). His current research interests focus on interrelations between media change and democracy. Research topics include the impact of media innovations on the formation of a European public sphere, multilevel governance, implications of the increase of alternative modes of regulation (self- and co-regulation) and questions regarding the future of public service broadcasting under the conditions of media convergence.
